T-Shirt Quilt Prep!

In preparing my sons quilt, which has a couple of t-shirts worked in so I thought it would be a good idea to write this tutorial on how to prepare you t-shirts for a quilt.

Supplies:
  • Scissors
  • T-shirts (Cleaned)
  • Pellon 911FF Fusible Featherweight Interfacing
  • Pressing Cloth
  • Iron

Layout the t-shirt on the table so you can get to the sides of the shirt easily.

Start by cutting each of the sides of the t-shirt open from the bottom. Cut the sleeves off as you move up the shirt sides.  Then move down the shoulder seams and around the neck to the other shoulder seam.  Be very careful not to cut through the backside of the shirt when you cut around the neck area, due to the possible decal on the backside of the shirt.

With the front laid out on the table, place and size the interfacing making sure you have a big enough piece to fit the final size of the cut shirt including the decal.  You want to interfacing to be over sized do to this will help stabilized the material so it will not stretch when you sew on it.

After you cut the interfacing you want to lay the piece on a pressing board or an ironing board, make sure the rough side is facing up. The rough side will be the side that sticks to the shirt.

Lay the shirt right side up on top of the interfacing, smoothing out all wrinkles.

Lay the pressing clothe on top of the decal, with a hot iron press the shirt hold a few seconds in each area, until the interfacing is sticking to the shirt when you check it.

Once the Shirt is  pressed, let it cool a few seconds, then lay the shirt on the cutting board, and cut the shirt down to the size you need for the block, making sure you leave 1/4" on all the sides for sewing either a border or sewing all your shirts together with a border.

Hope this all helps you!
