Double Four Patch Quilt and Pattern

Last week was one busy week, to start and finish a custom quilt that I nearly forgot that was due at the end of August.  Back in February, my husbands co-worker asked if I would make a pink double sized quilt for her husbands Aunt who is turning 95 at the end of August. They wanted a simple design since she could not see that well anymore. So I designed a Double 4 Patch quilt made out of Moda Marble Fabrics to help keep her costs down.

The Moda Marbles I choose was Pink Sherbert and Baby Pink.  They colors blended so well together, I was pleased.

The Double Four Patch is a easy quilt block for the beginner quilter. It consists of two four patch blocks and two solid square blocks.  You can get the Pattern for this quilt HERE.

Start by 15-2 1/2" x WOF strips of each color.

From those strips take one of each color and lay them so the right sides facing together. and sew them together with a 1/4" seam allowance. Make 15 Strip Sets.
Sew them together with a 1/4" seam allowance. Pressing the seams open toward the dark fabric.

On a cutting mat and ruler you will cut subcut the strip sets into 2 1/2" segments.  The ruler I'm using is the Bloc Loc Strip Set Ruler. It has channel locks that will lock to the seam and makes seams and fabric straight to get a nice straight accurate cut.

You will need 252 for this size quilt.
Take 2 segments and lay them down with right sides facing together and so the colors are opposite of each other.  Sew them together and when they open up they should look the picture above.  Press seam to one side. Make 126-4 1/2" squares.

Out of the Darker fabric cut 16 strips 4 1/2" x WOF, then subcut them into 126, 4 1/2" squares.

Assemble the block as shown above, with the 4-patch block light colors going all in the same direction.  Press seam to one side. Block should measure 8 1/2" x 8 1/2".

Take 2 blocks and lay them out so the look like the photo above.  Start with sewing just the top row together.  Make 31.

Then assemble the block so they look this above big block above. Make 12 that measure 16 1/2" x 16 1/2".

Assemble all the blocks together.  Refer to the Pattern for more instruction on this assembly processes.
Once you have all the blocks sewn together you just need to add borders.  For this quilts I added 3 borders. Border 1- 2 1/2" (Dark fabric), Border 2- 4 1/2" (Light fabric), Border 3- 6 1/2" (Dark fabric).

I finished this quilt with Quilters Dream Select batting and a pantograph called Garden Frills by Bean Girl Quilts.

Fabric Treatment for Silhouette

For those of you that own a Silhouette know you need your fabric stiff for cutting step.  Well instead of applying several application layers of starch, I have found a great product that works in one application.

I prepare my fabric for my Silhouette, with Terial Magic Stabilizing Fabric Spray.  This spray allows your fabric to become stiffer, and fray-resistant which you need when working with Applique.  The product is easy to apply in just 3 steps you will have your fabric treated. Terial Magic lasts but is water soluble and can be washed out if needed.

I start by cutting my fabric to size that you need for the cutting mat, but just a little bigger.  I square to final size once the fabric is retreat, just in case shrinkage, which I see very little shrinkage.

Spray Fabric
Next, I spray the fabric with Terial Magic over a bowl, to catch any drips.  Spray the fabric all over to get a good covering.
Check for Dry Spots
Check your fabric for dry spots. If there are any dry spots light spray those areas.
Squeeze Excess Out!
Squeeze any excess spray from the fabric into the bowl. Then hang the fabric until that fabric is almost all dry or completely dry. After the fabric is dry, it is very stiff and needs a good ironing.
Before Ironing

After Ironing
Fusible Web
remove paper backing
After you have ironed the fabric you can apply your fusible web to the back of the treated fabric.  Make sure fusible web is ironed on really well, according to your manufactures instructions. Remove the fusible web paper backing.  Place the fusible fabric with the fusible web facing the mat.  Then let your Silhouette do the cutting.

Below is a great video on how to treat you fabric with Terial Magic.

How you enjoy!  Do you own a electronic cutter (like Silhouette)? Do you use it for Applique?  If so, I would like to here from you how you treat your fabric.
