Island Batik Ambassadors Modern Challenge

This month the Island Batik Ambassadors were given the challenge to make a Modern Quilt that had to be crib size or larger.  In this modern quilt design, we were asked to incorporate at least one of the following characteristics.
  • the use of bold colors and prints
  • high contrast and graphic areas of solid color
  • improvisational piecing
  • Minimalism
  • expansive negative space
  • alternate grid work

With those characteristics and size to think about, I went with a minimalistic design with a lot of negative space. Additionally, I thought about the fabrics that I could use in the quilt.  I wanted to play with the colors from my Island Batik Paisley Dot Brights 10" stacks and used my EQ8 Design program to layout my quilt blocks.

This particular pattern uses the 5 different colors from the Paisley Dot Bright Stacks. The Island Batik 10" stacks come with two 10" pieces of each color which was great for my project.

After all my pieces were cut out, I started making strip sets from the purple colors, and the red and pink strips. From there I sub-cutted the red and pink strip into two different sizes. I also made some half square triangles that would be in the corners of the strip sets.

After all strips sewn together, it was time to start stitching the striped blocks together.

Once all the striped blocks were done, I stitched the 10" background blocks and the striped block together to complete the quilt top.   To finish everything,  I added some straight lines stitching for the quilting and a red binding from my Island Batik Paisley Dot collection.

The girls both approve of the quilt.
