Kansas City Star BOM #9

First off I would like to apologize for the down website on Sunday, we were trying to get it fixed as soon as possible.  We came back up first thing the web service opened this morning mountain time.  We now have the emergency of hours number so we have the problem again we can get it fixed immediately.

Yesterday, was a busy day of quilting and sewing.  I caught up on my latest Kansas City Star Block of the Month and Started quilting a string quilt for my mother-in-law.

The latest block was Month 9 - "Pin Wheels" which was first published in the Kansas City Star Newspaper in 1930.

KC Star Block #9
Using 4 different fabrics cut  2 7/8" squares and 4 1/2".  On the light block draw diagonally lines  on the wrong side on the 2 7/8".  Then combining them with the green and brown fabric and sewing 1/4" on each side of the diagonal line.
KC Star Block #9Then cut apart on the marked line and press to the dark side.  Square up to a 2 1/2" x 2 1/2".  Making 16 half square triangles (hst) of the green and 4 brown half square triangles.
KC Star Block #9Once all the half square triangles are made layout the squares this way to make the pinwheels.  Assemble the units, combining the units by sewing laying the right on the left side unit. Press the top half units to the right and the bottom units to the left.  When all the top units and the bottom units are assembled sew the the top to the bottom and press to the bottom.  Making 4 units of the green.
KC Star Block #9

Then do the same for the brown units, just making 1 unit.

KC Star Block #9
Next is to Assembly all the pinwheels with the 4 1/2" squares.

KC Star Block #9
First by layout the units for the sewing order. Assemble all the rows together and then assembling each of the rows together. Pressing to the center. To Make on 12 1/2" x 12 1/2" block.

Nine blocks are now done three more to go.

KC Star Block #9

Now to finish the string quilt and get back to my new pattern design.

Talk to you tomorrow.

Kansas City Star BOM #8

Yesterday,  I decided to get the first one of the two Blocks of the Month that needed to be caught up on done.  The block I worked on was the Kansas City Star Block 8 "The Rolling Stone".  This block was first printed in the Kansas City Start 1936.

KC Star Block #8
The Block starts with cutting 4 1/2" squares, 2 1/2" squares and 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles out of four different fabrics.

KC Star Block #8
Next, using the 4 1/2" square tan fabric, 2 1/2" red fabrics, and 2 1/2" blue fabrics you make the corner block units.  Marking the center with a diagonal line down the center of the 2 1/2" blocks.  After you have marked all the 2 1/2" blocks you will then take the 4 red - 2 1/2" block and sew them on the top left corner of each of the 4 1/2" blocks using the diagonal line as a stitch line.

KC Star Block #8
Then trim the corner back to 1/4" away from the seam and press open.

KC Star Block #8Repeat on the opposite corner with the 2 1/2" blue square.
KC Star Block #8

Then follow with the remaining red 2 1/2" blocks to finish the corners all the way around.

KC Star Block #8
Since the corner units are now done now is to make the outer in between block units.  These are fairly easy by just joining the tan and blue 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles together and then pressing the seam to the dark.

KC Star Block #8
Now it is time to layout the units to join them together to finish the block.

KC Star Block #8

Sew all the rows individually and you will join them together.

KC Star Block #8
The Finished unit! Now the 8th block of the 12 is done.  These are so much fun.

KC Star Block #8
Have a great Weekend,

Tina

Kansas City Star BOM #7!

Kansas City City Star BOM #7Yesterday, I took a little time off of Pattern designing and made the newest Block of the Month for the Kansas City Star Quilt.

This month is Block 7 - "Corn and Beans" which was first published in 1930.  This block is a variation of the "Shoo-Fly" block.  This was a fun and charming block to complete.

Kansas City City Star BOM #7You start preparing for the patches, by making 4 flying geese  and 12 -2 1/2" half triangles.

Kansas City City Star BOM #7Then you can start the center blocks by making half Square blocks.  You start with combining 2 1/2" square block with triangle on each side to make a large triangle then sewing the brown triangle to make a large half Square block that measures 4 1/2".

Kansas City City Star BOM #7Then for the other center unit you need to combine 2 1/2" square with an 2 1/2" half square triangle to make a row. Then sew a 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangle on the bottom of the squares that were just combined.
Next you need to sew 2- 2 1/2" square on both sides of the flying geese unit.  Now that all the blocks are now complete you sew them all together to get the final block(above).

Block 7 is now complete, just 5 more to go.

2013 Designer Mystery Block 11!

2013 Designer MysteryYesterday, was a day of catch-up.  I spent the morning catching up my desk work.  Then, I moved into the sewing room cleaning and boxing up the T-Shirt Quilt for Shipping.  I will mail, once I hear from my customer.

2013 Designer Mystery Block 11After the cleaning, was done I started working on Block 11 of the 2013 Designer Mystery Block of Month.  Block 11 is called "Perennial Petals".  Once that pieces are cut and marked, I made 4 half square triangles.

2013 Designer Mystery Block 11Then I started on the pedals, which is a 3 1/2" x 6 1/2" rectangles, with 2 squares sewn on the bottom corners.

2013 Designer Mystery Block 11

Next, I assembled the 9 patch center, with the 2 1/2" blue dot in the middle.

2013 Designer Mystery Block 11After I laid out the block with all the pieces, the assembly of the block was fast and easy.
2013 Designer Mystery Block 11

Now, I just have one more block and the quilt blocks will be done and I can put the quilt top together.

Well Time to go into the studio, and get working on the next project.

I hope everyone has a great sewing and quilting day.

2013 Designer Mystery Block 10!

2013 Designer Mystery Block 10Yesterday, I got to sew after a week of busy work around my house and friends houses.  I just received my next block in the 2013 Designer Mystery, so I worked on that and a couple of other things.

I cant believe I'm on Month 10 now, only two more months and I can put this quilt together.  I cant wait. Month 10 - "New Bloom", looks like what it is a flower at full bloom.

After the basic cutting, you start with the petals of the flower.  You start by making two different half-square triangles.  Which will give you four half squares.  2013 Designer Mystery Block 10Then you take a piece of 4 1/2" square that is mark diagonally across the fabric and sew them on the blue corner of the fabric to get the 3 layer look.  Trim to a 1/4" seam allowance and press open.

2013 Designer Mystery Block 10After that you need to sew the 2" squares across the side ends so they across the three different fabrics. Need to that for both sides. The Petals are done once you trim and press open.

2013 Designer Mystery Block 10Next you are going to make the center of the flower.  You make four small flying geese units.  Then sew them to 2 1/2" green and cream fabrics that were sewn together.

2013 Designer Mystery Block 10Sew the sides to the middle blocks to make the three rows.

2013 Designer Mystery Block 10Then all you need to do is sew that rows together and you have your finished block.  I love this one I think this one was my favorite one of them all so far.

Well I think today, I will work on the next Kansas City Star block that just came so I have them all done for this month.

Tina
