Today, I would like to share a previous blog post from December, 2012 on my biggest Inspiration in my sewing and quilting.
_______________________________________________________________________
My Mom, Sister, and Me 2012 |
Also while I was little, I remember my mom going to a quilt class in Spokane, Washington and watching her put the log cabin blocks together for a quilt. It was very scrappy, and I still have and cherish that quilt. I think that was when I fell in love with quilts, now that I think about it. I have collected a lot of her quilts that she made over the years, I used them for our bed and throughout our house. That’s what I love about quilts, they will last forever due to the loved and care that is put into making them.
Another inspiration in sewing is my aunt. She is a gifted seamstress, and would make clothes for people in her sewing room from her house. She was especially gifted in making formal clothing. In fact she made my prom dresses for two different years, and then she made my beautiful wedding gown.
This summer, when I was home on vacation my mom gave me a box of quilting patterns that had belonged to my great-grandma Evers. These patterns came to her by mail from Farmers Magazine. In working on the pattern my great-grandma cut many of the patterns templates from old cereal boxes. Also in the box containing the old template pieces was an old quilt block she had sewn together. You turn it over you can see her hand stitching.
As you can tell, sewing and quilting runs in the family. But my biggest inspiration in my life, sewing and quilting is my mom. Plus, she along with my dad have always been my number one fans. I thank them for always being there for me and my sister. I love you!

Awesome, I love reading how your mom inspired you, it would be lovely to see some of those wonderful quilts that are also around your home... I hope you will show those sometime soon.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your inspiration with us. vanda@chittenden.co.za
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your quilt inspiration!
ReplyDeleteI enjoy ready about your family of quilters!
ReplyDeleteThank you for this nice post!
ReplyDeleteI learned how to sew in High School. NO ONE in my family sews but me. This is a good post.
ReplyDeleteVery nice story! I am the first one quilting in my family so I hope that in the future we will have inspirational stories to share!
ReplyDeleteI learned the basics from my Mom and in Home Ec classes. But once I got married I lucked into a wonderful resource -- my MIL is an accomplished seamstress and quilter. She has helped and encouraged me so much.
ReplyDeleteIt's wonderful that your family passed on sewing to you. I'm self taught; it would have been nice to have some instruction as I was growing up!
ReplyDeleteMy mother taught me embroidery when I was 7. We went to classes together and I still have the butterfly thread keepers. I taught myself to quilt about 6 years ago and have loved it ever since.
ReplyDeleteIt's great when you can learn the love of a craft thru family. My Grand and Great Grand were quilters too, but I didn't learn at their knees. Although later in life, my Grandma and I enjoyed our love of the craft together.
ReplyDeletehow lovely to get your love of quilting from your mom. I'm the first in my family to sew quilts as far as I know.
ReplyDeleteMy mom is also my sewing inspiration. She never really enjoyed quilting but she did sew all of the time. I never had "store bought" clothes until I was in high school and I wanted jeans from the store. When I was a baby my mom says she would use her clothing to make me clothes as there was not much money to buy fabric for my clothing. Sew, yes I understand getting the inspiration to love creating wonderful things with fabric.
ReplyDeleteGreat story!!! My mother in law taught me
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your story of quilting. My Mom, 2 Aunts made quilts.
ReplyDeletepatsystitch@gvtc.com
My mom helped me with my quilting journey too. She didn't piece or quilt and really didn't understand my love of hand quilting b/c I didn't do hems. Yet she bought me a hard rock maple quilting frame from Coeur d' Alene, Idaho. I still have it and each time I look at it I remember my mom.
ReplyDeleteYou were blessed with a great family. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI find lots of comfort knowing I am following in my own Mama's footsteps sewing and quilting for those I love!
ReplyDeleteMy mom taught me to sew also, and I am so thankful for her and the skill
ReplyDeleteYou are so fortunate to have inspirational family members. Neither my mom, nor the grandmother that I grew up with were crafty or artistic.
ReplyDeleteSuch a nice tribute to your mom and family.
ReplyDeleteIt was so nice to her about the inspiration your mother gave to you. My mother didn't quilt, but as I early had an interest for crafting, she let me play with fabric and the sewing machine to make doll-clothes.
ReplyDeleteI confess that I envy quilters who had mothers and grandmothers to teach and inspire them. How lucky you are.
ReplyDeleteFamily, mothers and all to have someone to inspire you is from the heart.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful story! How lucky you were to have such inspiration in your family.
ReplyDeleteFamily ties are the best quilting moments
ReplyDeleteWhere would we be without our mothers? I loved your quilting story. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed reading about your mother. My mother was also a quilter and I think about all the quilts she made, without having any of the fancy tools we now use. They are treasured.
ReplyDeleteThose women in one's life are definitely inspiring. My mom & aunt taught me how to sew too. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteMy sister is my inspiration - although she has several chronic diseases she remains upbeat and super giving to everyone!!! and she is a crazy card maker and appreciator of my quilts!!! :)
ReplyDeleteMy 10 year old niece is my inspiration...so clever and sweet, she is.
ReplyDeletegotta marvel at the women in our lives who make an impact. my mom was also my inspirtation in many areas. but sewing was always a part of it all. i learned a lot from her not only about sewing but about life. thanks for sharing.

Oh I know how much it must mean to your mom that you've taken inspiration from her quilting. My aunt also was my inspiration in my sewing interest!
ReplyDeleteWonderful to learn about who inspired you!! I guess I could say it was the same for me except that neither my mom nor my aunt quilted... They did create in other ways (knitting, crochet, and sewing). Thanks for sharing!!
ReplyDeleteI also grew up with a sewing family. My mother and grandmother both sewed clothing and quilts. My sister and I both sew clothing and quilts. Thank you for sharing your story.
ReplyDeleteSo nice to read your inspiration story. Thanks so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother was the quilter in our family, so I was inspired by her to start. However, my mom is my biggest champion, so I'm inspired by her to keep going!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing a lovely story. My grandmother crocheted and my mother dabbled in making garments for 4 daughters when she was not working, but I'm the first to quilt. I've managed to get two of my sisters into quilting-we inspire each other.

My mom was my inspiration too! Great story.
ReplyDeletemy quilting inspiration was my mom, a hand quilter.
ReplyDeleteI've been sewing since I was 12, also inspired by my Mom. I'm now 67!
ReplyDeleteHow nice that you have a family of quilters. I'm the first quilter in my family and while my daughter has done some quilting, she's just too busy right now to do it. Maybe some day she'll get back to it.
ReplyDeleteI learned to sew from my mom as well! I wish my daughters had caught the bug, but not yet...
ReplyDeleteYou are so lucky to have had a Mom to teach you and still inspire you. Hugs to both of you.
ReplyDeleteI love that you have old quilt patterns that were your great-grandma's and one of her blocks. That is so special!
ReplyDeleteMy Mom taught me how to sew long before school classes. We always shopped for fabric. Remember Woolworth??
ReplyDeleteNo one else in my family quilts . . . and they keep asking what I am doing making ANOTHER quilt!
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful story- and what a treasure to have the patterns and templates from so many years ago along with the block! My mom quilts a bit and my sister does amazing whimsical pictoral/ collage type quilts. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI'm another quilter from Spokane!
ReplyDeleteMy mom taught me to sew as well. She never quilted so I make her quilts.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful post on your inspiration. thanks for sharing

ReplyDeleteMoms are the best and especially when they inspire us to be great in what we do. What a special gift that was to inherit those quilting patterns from great-grandma.
ReplyDeleteSo glad that you have Mom and others to inspire!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the give away!

ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous story that is. I love how you told it, and how you feel about your mom really comes through, and your aunt, too. Thanks for sharing on this hop. desertskyquilts.wordpress.com
ReplyDeleteWhat a treasured family sewing history! My grandmother was also a quilter, and I am privileged to own one she and HER grandmother made when she (my gramma) was a girl. Ugly, and falling apart, I wouldn't trade it for the world! Thank you for sharing your story. lynnstck(at)yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your story. I grew up sleeping under quilts made by my mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. I also have quilts made by them that we use today. What a rich heritage we have. Nancy A: rangers@sbcglobal.net
ReplyDeleteWhat a history you have with fabric and sewing. I hope your journey takes you on many new roads of quilting.
ReplyDeleteMy Mom was my inspiration too. We sat on a quilt frame and embroidered state flowers on a white sheet. Unfortunately, it didn't last and has been gone for years, but I will never forget that. Thanks for the memories.
ReplyDeleteHow fortunate you are that you had interest in what your mom was doing. You never forget what you learn in your youth.
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother was my sewing inspiration. She taught me to sew clothing when I was 12.

ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your quilting story. I am a self-taught quilter. I learned the basics of sewing in school and did sew my own clothes when I was younger. When I made a dress for my granddaughter recently I had to remember what I used to know about sewing garments. These days I'd rather be quilting ... :) Pat
ReplyDeleteWhat a treasure families are when they pass on their gifts. Sounds like your mother shared her love of stitching with you. What fun you will have with your grandmothers patterns. Wonderful post :)

ReplyDeleteWow. My mom never sewed and I had completely forgotten the one person in my life who sewed. It was my Aunt. I grew up very poor and I now remember how my aunt used to make my sister and I matching outfits for the yearly Family Reunions. Thanks for the reminder. I need to write her a letter. LOL.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing about your mom and how she inspired your quilting.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your journey. My Mom was an inspiration to me. She made most of mine and my sister's clothes when we were growing up.
ReplyDeleteMy mother as well was a huge inspiration to me to learn about sewing at a young age!
ReplyDeleteMy mother was my inspiration too, along with my grandma. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteSewing runs in my family, too. Although they weren't/aren't quilters, they encouraged me to sew and helped me through every frustration and stumble along the way.
ReplyDeleteMy mom was my inspiration, too!
ReplyDeleteMy mom was my inspiration also. Having five daughters and two sons, she made a lot of our clothing and home dec items. I am the only daughter that sews.
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother quilts and she is my inspiration. I still turn to her for help. I am glad that she is still here.

What a wonderful story! I came to quilting on my own, but I now sew with my granddaughter, and I hope she will come to love quilting as much as I do. Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThat is fantastic that you and your mom share such a love of sewing and quilting.
ReplyDeleteMy mom taught me to embroider when I was six and has helped me with all my crafty endeavors since. She never really made many things until I started, but now we get to learn and create together. It is a true joy. I have also been creating with my niece, she has her own sewing machine and fabric stash and is well on her way to being as quazy about quilting as I am!
Thanks for a chance to win.

ReplyDeleteMy grandma used to babysit me a lot and she would often sew while we played either in her sewing room or in her attic - which is where she stored gobs and gobs of fabric! I was always in heaven when I was at her place!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing. My Mom was not much of a seamstress, but she did make us a few dresses when we were little. My grandmother, however, made countless quilts using any and every scrap of fabric she could get her hands on.

ReplyDeleteTina, it's wonderful to meet you and know that you're keeping this art going, learning from your mom as I did. Mom was a sewist, quilter, rag rug crocheter, embroidery by hand, you name it. I loved that she took me under her wing at an early age and let me sew on a machine. That was 40 some years ago and I'm stitching and teaching it to so many others. Two Aunties are also inspiring me to learn quilting and keep it alive in the family. I'm fulfilling their wishes too:
