Half Square Triangle Grid Method

On Tuesday, I started a new project and I need to make 80 half square triangles.  I learned a new trick to making multiple of triangles at one time.  Thought I would share with you all.

This method of making multiple Half Square triangle can be used for any size by changing the base square size.  I was using the 4" square size for this quilt top.

First, you need to cut 2 pieces of different fabrics measuring 8 1/2" x 21".  Then with the lighter color of fabric, turn it over with the wrong side facing up.  You are now going to make a 2 x 5 grid on the back of the fabric, like below.  You will have a 1/4" all the way around on the outer edges of the fabric, when you are finishing drawing all the squares.  Then, draw diagonal lines to make the triangles.

Then put the 2 pieces with right sides together, pinning in the middle if needed.

At the sewing machine, start at the top left side of the fabric start sewing 1/4" from the diagonal line.  Following the lines all the way around.

Repeat on the other side of the line.

When you are finished it would like this.

At the cutting board you are going to cut apart on all the drawn lines.

You will yield 20 half square triangles from the fabric. Press open and square to the patterns instructions.

This was a fast way to make multiple half square triangles at on time. If you want to make a 4 1/2" square size, use a 10" x 23" piece of fabric, and use the  2 x 5 grid.

Have a great quilting making day!

Christmas Joy Row 4!

Sunday, was a great day to sew since my husband had to work this week.  So, I finished my homework for the Christmas Joy Sample Quilt Class, which was to make row #4 the Tree row.  The pattern want you to make it out of creams for the background and green for the trees.  Well, I decided to instead to make the background out of my blues and I'm so glad I did.  It goes so well with the church row.

I also got the top and bottom strip of the joy row on  the row, after spending the day yesterday redoing the row.  My reasoning to redo the row, was the row was 2 1/2" short, I found out on Friday my 1/4" seam allowance was off.  So, on Saturday evening after taking apart a few piece of the row and measuring a few things it was just better to redo the whole row.  I'm so glad I did, It will make everything look nice and measure out right in the long run.

Next Friday, will be the next class, we will be making the checkerboard sashing pieces and the basket rows.  Only a couple of classes left and we will be done.  Peter is a great teacher, and I'm learning more and more every class.

Today, since my workout is done, I will grab my coffee and start a new project.

Christmas Joy Quilt Row 3!

Friday evening, I had another class on the Christmas Joy Sampler Quilt at Michelle's Quilts.  We were putting together the church row and the tree row this week.  2 rows at one time seems a lot but really we are just repeating the same trees in the church row into the tree row.

So, yesterday I put the church together and starting cutting out the tree row.  This was a fast and easy row to put together. The steeples are done with foundation piecing which make a nice point for the tops.

Today, I will work on the last of my homework assignment on this class, which is putting the row 4 together the tree row.
