Women of Courage Block 9!

Hope everyone had a great weekend!  I know we did, we picked up our new vehicle from the dealership.  We got a  new Hyundai Santa Fe, It was my husbands choice in vehicles, but I love it also.  Sunday, we had a great day, working on business work in the morning and watching the Seattle Seahawks win there first Super Bowl Championship.  My husband is now happy, he has been a fan since they started in 1976.

Yesterday, I totally forgot a blog post, sorry about that.  I did get more done on the finalizing the website done, ordered batting for my longarm service and to sell in my store.  Plus, I did get another block done on the Women of Courage Quilt.  

Block 9- Mother Teresa, block starts with making 16 hour glass units.  That's right we are making 16 blocks.

Once you have the hour glass made you will sew brown triangles on left side on 8 of the units and then on the other 8 units sew the brown on the right side.  

 You will repeat this process with the background color triangles, to finish sewing making the half square triangles.

Once your triangles are ready, sew them to the blue fabric to finish the square and press open. 

The Mother Teresa blocks will look like these.  8 units with the brown in the right hand side and 8 units with the brown in left hand side.  This is a easy block to complete and is pretty.

Well time to head to the sewing room to make more blocks.

Women of Courage - Block 8!

Yesterday, I did get another Month done on my Women of Courage Block of Month.  Month 8 was "Mary Wilson".  She was an Operating Room Supervisor for a field hospital on Anzio beach during World War II.    She was the first woman to be awarded the Silver Star for leadership under fire.  

The block is fairly easy to make,  you start with the pieces, which are just triangles and squares.  You are going to make 8 of these blocks.

You start with making 16 hour glass units, by sewing the triangles together.

Then you make 8 half-square triangle units.

Wants all the units are made your just need to assemble the blocks, by sewing the brown squares to half of the hour glass units, with the blue pointing to the top.  Then sewing the other half of the hour glass units to the half square triangles.  Making sure the blue of the hour glass is pointing to outside.

Once you have those done all you have to do is sew them together to complete the block.

The finished block will measure 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" unfinished.  I'm getting closer to be able to start assembling the blocks and getting this one done.

Women of Courage - Block 7 UFO!

Yesterday, I got back my Janome 7700 from the doctors, her thread cutter was not working probably, plus she needed a good cleaning.  I'm a happy camper.  I like my backup Janome, but it is not my 7700.  I really recommend getting your machines cleaned every year to 18 months.  They collect a lot of line at the bottom and need lubed.

So, I decided to test out my machine by working on the Women of Courage Block of Month that has become a UFO.  I think the last block came last summer sometime, really can't remember when it wrapped up.  But I have decided to get this one finished.  Everything I have been finishing the last couple weeks will be heading to the longarm for quilting.  These will all be great quilting practice for me. 

The Women of Courage quilt, was designed around great women in our history.  I left off with Block 7- "Sacagawea". We are making 16th blocks.

The blocks are made from different size Triangles, and squares.  

Starting with sewing red floral on the sides of the brown squares that measure 3 11/16".  This is the first time, I made something with 1/16th".  It was kind of interesting to figure out, but luckily the pattern had instructions how to locate the 11/16".  It is basically in between 5/8" and 3/4". 

Once all those are done, you can start sewing the green floral triangles on the side making 32 of these halves.

Take 16 of the halves then flip them so they are on the other side and combine them and press open and the block is finished.  Very easy block to make.

I have 5 more block to make to finish this quilt.  



Today, I don't know if I will get any sewing done.  This is Wednesday and Husband is off and we have errands to get done.  Sometimes, it is easier to them on weekdays. So, I hope everyone has a great day!

I can’t believe it is Thursday already, time for another one of my series on My Favorite shops.  This week I like to highlight Fat Quarter Shop.  

Fat Quarter Shop is very nice online quilting store that has a large selection of fabrics from all the major fabric manufacturers, from Moda to Windham.  They make is easy to search for fabrics you need by letting you search by theme, designer, collection and Manufacturer.  You can even buy fabrics in specialty cuts, jelly rolls, layer cakes, desert rolls, and much more.  They even have the Moda Pre-cuts in their own page.

 

Not only do they carry a large selection of fabrics, but they also carry a nice selection of patterns, books, quilting kits, notions & thread. They also have quilt clubs, which are similar to Block of Month, but you also receive fabric.  You can choose from fat quarters, jelly rolls, charm packs, and for a set price you will receive 12 print bundle plus 3 solids, depending on the club on which you choose.  

Fat Quarter Shop has a nice selection of Block of Month programs, including Fat Quarter Shop exclusive Designer Block of Month Program.  I’m at the half way point on a block of the month and is turning out very nicely, their patterns are easy to read.  They don't skimp on the fabric you receive each month. I really look forward to see the end product.  I also have been receiving the Women of Courage Block of Month quilt pattern; the patterns are mailed right on time. I have never had a problem with them.

 

They have a whole selection on Christmas fabric called the Christmas Cloth Store. The Store is set up like the Fat Quarter Shop’s main page only has Christmas Fabrics and patterns.

 

Fat Quarter Shop also has a great selection of free patterns, and other helpful links.  In addition they have a selection on fabrics, patterns and kits that are coming soon.  Great way to look and see what fabrics will be coming out in 2013.

Caught Up "Women Of Courage" BOM

In June of this year, I received my first block and backing for  "Women of Courage" Block of the Month quilt, through the Fat Quarter Shop.  I liked the idea of blocks and a quilt that represent the strong women and courage of women in our history.

Month 3

Each block when complete will measure 9-1/2 inches unfinished. The total of 12 months will measure out with finished quilt size of 98" x 98". Month One block was Nancy Wake and Month two was Sojourner Truth, which I finished several months ago and then got involved in other projects.  So, I decide this weekend would be a good time to catch up on my blocks.

Month 4

So the last couple of days, I have been having a little fun catching up. Saturday, I finish Month 3 - Christi McAuliffe block.  

Sunday, I completed Months 4, 5, and 6, which caught me up to the current month.  Month 4 was decade to Bessie Coleman, you had to make two of the same blocks you did in Months 1 through 3. 

Month 5

With Month 5, they combined two women Maud Fitch & Susan B. Anthony, so you are making one block for each of them. They are nice blocks, with the backings different from the others.

Month 6

Month 6, also combines two women Helen Keller & Mary Edwards Walker. These two blocks were a little easier than the others I completed earlier in the day.  

Only 6 more months left to go as this will end in May 2013. I'm looking forward to seeing the other blocks as they come in the mail.  Overall it was a great weekend for catching up on a project that I was behind on.  Hoping everyone had a productive weekend like I did!
