Island Batik Ambassador Challenge: Cozy Cabins, Log Cabin Challenge

This month's Island Batik Ambassador Challenge takes the Log Cabin and puts a new twist on them.  I was excited to make my first log cabin quilt, and I knew exactly what kind of cabin blocks I wanted to make. All I had to do was come up with a unique design.

Since I'm also a Studio 180 Design Certified Instructor, It was a no-brainer that I would make my quilt using the tools.  The Studio 180 Design tools I used in this project were the Tucker Trimmer I and the Wing Clipper I tools along with the Geese on the Edge Technique Sheet.

The Island Batik Fabric the I choose was from the Vintage Morris Collection,  I would be using yardage and the Island Strips for this quilt.  I would also use an Island Batik Neutral "Vanilla" fabric for the background.

The first thing I started with was sorting my Island Strips out and into three stacks, light, medium, and dark.  An easy way to do this is to take a picture of the fabric and turn them into black and white images as shown above.

Now, that I have them sorted it was time to make my 6" Geese on the Edge blocks.  Starting with a center square, sew strips of the neutral fabric on each.

and continue on the other side and using the Wing Clipper you trim off the corner to add a different color.

And once the new triangle is stitch on you trim using your Tucker Trimmer tool.

Then, I add another round of strips, this time I used the strips that came from the Island Strip package.  I continued working sewing the corners and strips around alternating the colors.

Once I had all my block completed, the next step was to add strips and combination units between the blocks.

And filled in the blank spots with the Island Batik Neutral fabrics.

And here is the final product.  The quilt ended up being 60" x 60", I used Hobbs Tuscany Wool and quilted it with a nice pantograph to finish the quilt off.  The picture is from a beautiful beach Fort Denton, Florida area.  Making this quilt was so much fun, I love the Geese on the Edge block and can't wait to teach this in a class.

  1. The little hourglass blocks that you get are so much fun in this log cabin variation. I never heard of this geese on the edge block but I love it.
