Nuts About!!! Applique and Piece Patterns

Welcome to Day 3 of the Nut's About ? Blog Hop.  I'm Nuts About combining Applique and Piecing Patterns.  I have always had a love of designing these type of patterns which goes back well before, I started my business.

The first pattern I designed as a Applique and Piece pattern, was what I called my Tulip Quilt.  This pattern was designed in EQ7 with some of the templates includes with the software. This gorgeous quilt top was made in bright pinks and greens.  The leave borders was an after thought and was not in my original design.  The vines where made from Sue Pelland leave and stems templates. 

 

After finishing this quilt I entered it in the Charles County Fair and won Best in Show.  I not yet developed the pattern for this quilt, maybe some day I will have to do that.

My next quilt I that I would like to share is an Applique and Piecing quilt that was an original design by my mother in law, Diane Dillard and myself.  "Hearts Delight", pattern was our first Applique and Piecing quilt we did together and has become one of our most popular quilt patterns.  This two color pattern combined with one panel of Applique hearts and vines makes this a beautiful quilt.  The pieced blocks are a variation of the churn dash.  This quilt measure at 59 1/2" x 70", making a great wallhanging or lap quilt.

My absolute favorite combination quilt pattern I have designed is "Lilies in the Wind".  This quilt was developed with Batiks fabrics in mind.  I designed all the piece blocks and the layout.  Once I had the layout, I noticed it need some applique.  I played with a few ideas, but was not happy with it.  So I then contacted my Mother in law, Diane and she came up with the applique pieces and border.  From what she gave me I modified the sizes and and the borders to my liking.  The quilt measures 50" x 50" when finished.

My most recent Applique and piecing combination design is my 2016 Block of the Month, "Dance with Me". This will be my first pattern combination quilt top I have designed specifically for a Block of the Month.  If you would like more information on this quilt just click HERE.

Dance with Me BOM Block 1, Step 3 Assembly!

Step 3 Assembly

The last couple days we have covered process to make Block 1 of the “Dance with Me” BOM Block 1.

 

How to make the Flying Geese - HERE

Center blocks - HERE

Today we will be finishing the blocks with the Assembly process.

Note: I will be just talking about the assembly process in these blocks, if you need the exact number of blocks to make or cutting information please download the pattern, HERE.  Also, I’m assuming that you have already finished the cutting of your pieces following the Cutting Instructions. All seams are sewn with ¼” seam allowance.

Let’s get this started

Step 1. Assemble D rectangles on each side of the flying geese units, to make a D/CFC/D Units.

Row 1 and 3

 

To make Row 1 and 3, Assemble A squares on both ends of the D/CFC/D Units you just finished.  (Refer to pattern instructions to get the total number to make.)

Row 2

To make Row 2, Assemble 2 D/CFC/D Units on each side of the center block. 

Tip: Make sure to align the flying geese points and center point of the center block. Pin a much as possible so there is no movement of the units.

Assembly of Rows

Step 1.  Lay the rows out as shown in the above picture.  Row 1, Row 2, Row 3.

Step 2. Sew Row 1 to Row 2 (center), assuring that all the seams and points align up. 
Press open.

Step 3. Sew Row 3 to the bottom of the already assembled Row 1 and 2 units. Again assuring that all the seams and points align up. Press open.

Repeat until you have all the center blocks completed for the total of 9 blocks. (Refer to pattern instructions).

Dance with Me BOM Block 1, Step 2 Center Units

Step 2 Center Units

Yesterday we went over how to make the Flying Geese. You can see that blog HERE.

Step 2 of the Block 1 is to make center units for the block

Note: I will be just talking about the assembly process in these blocks, if you need the exact number of blocks to make or cutting information please download the pattern, HERE.  Also, I’m assuming that you have already finished the cutting of your pieces following the Cutting Instructions in the pattern.  All seams are sewn with ¼” seam allowance.

Pieces need for this step will be B, E, G, H squares.

Step 1.  Draw a diagonal lines on the back of all of the following squares, B, G, and H.

Step 2. We will be starting with the B and E squares.  Layer a B square with an E square, right sides facing.  Sew a ¼” on each side of the drawn diagonal line.

Step 3. Cut on diagonal line, press seams open.

These half square triangles are labeled (B/E units).

Step 4.  Lay G square on top B/E unit on the bottom right corner (E fabric side) with right sides facing. See diagram above.

Step 5. Stitch the diagonal line.

Step 5. Trim the ¼” away from sewn line. Press open.

Step 6. On the opposite corner Lay H square on top B/E unit on the Top left corner (B fabric side), right sides facing. (See diagram above). Sew on the diagonal line.

Step 7. Trim the ¼” away from sewn line. Press open.

Step 8. Square the center block according to the pattern instructions.

Step 9.  Lay 2 of the center blocks as shown above.

Step 10.  Lay the 2 units right sides together.  Make sure to align the seams and pin them together.  Press open. Repeat with 2 more center blocks to make 2 halves.

Step 11. Sew the two halves together, remember to match up all the seams to assure all the lines match up.

Step 12. Press open to complete the center block. Repeat until you have all the center blocks completed (refer to pattern instructions).

Dance with Me BOM Block 1 – Step 1 Flying Geese

Step 1 Flying Geese

Today, starts the first of 3 blogs on how to assemble block 1.  I will be just talking about the assembly process in these blogs, if you need the exact number of blocks to make or cutting instructions, please download the pattern, HERE.

I’m assuming that you have already finished the cutting of your fabric pieces following the Cutting Instructions.  

Tip: One clever way to label your pieces is to use the white parts selvage pieces mark the letter with a fabric marking pencil. All seams are sewn with ¼” seam allowance.

OK, let’s get started. No Waste Flying Geese is my favorite way to assemble flying geese.

For the flying geese you will need pieces C and F.

Step 1. On the back of the C squares you will need to draw a diagonal lines.

Step 2. Lay an F square down right side up and lay 2 C squares right sides facing down on the opposite corners of the F square. Make sure the corners overlap and the diagonal lines match up. Sew 1/4"  on each side of the diagonal line.

 

Step 3. Cut down the center to make 2 units.  Press open.

Step 4. After pressing, lay another C square on the corner of the half unit, like above.  The diagonal line will be in the center of the two wings. Sew ¼” on each side of the diagonal line.

Step 5. Cut down the center of the diagonal line and press the open to finish the unit.  Square to the size your instructions state.  Repeat until you have all the center blocks completed (refer to pattern instructions).

Dance with Me Block of Month, Block 1!

Today, launches the First block in our series of blocks for the Dance with Me, Block of Month.  Block 1, Piece Blocks.  The blocks measure 10 ½” x 10 ½”.

The pattern has 3 basic elements:

- Flying Geese
 - Center Block assembly
- Assembly

I will go over the each element in the next 3 days blog post to help you along through the process.
