Kansas City Star BOM #9

First off I would like to apologize for the down website on Sunday, we were trying to get it fixed as soon as possible.  We came back up first thing the web service opened this morning mountain time.  We now have the emergency of hours number so we have the problem again we can get it fixed immediately.

Yesterday, was a busy day of quilting and sewing.  I caught up on my latest Kansas City Star Block of the Month and Started quilting a string quilt for my mother-in-law. 

The latest block was Month 9 - "Pin Wheels" which was first published in the Kansas City Star Newspaper in 1930. 


Using 4 different fabrics cut  2 7/8" squares and 4 1/2".  On the light block draw diagonally lines  on the wrong side on the 2 7/8".  Then combining them with the green and brown fabric and sewing 1/4" on each side of the diagonal line.
Then cut apart on the marked line and press to the dark side.  Square up to a 2 1/2" x 2 1/2".  Making 16 half square triangles (hst) of the green and 4 brown half square triangles.
Once all the half square triangles are made layout the squares this way to make the pinwheels.  Assemble the units, combining the units by sewing laying the right on the left side unit. Press the top half units to the right and the bottom units to the left.  When all the top units and the bottom units are assembled sew the the top to the bottom and press to the bottom.  Making 4 units of the green.


Then do the same for the brown units, just making 1 unit.


Next is to Assembly all the pinwheels with the 4 1/2" squares.


First by layout the units for the sewing order. Assemble all the rows together and then assembling each of the rows together. Pressing to the center. To Make on 12 1/2" x 12 1/2" block.



Nine blocks are now done three more to go.



Now to finish the string quilt and get back to my new pattern design.

Kansas City Star BOM #8

Yesterday,  I decided to get the first one of the two Blocks of the Month that needed to be caught up on done.  The block I worked on was the Kansas City Star Block 8 "The Rolling Stone".  This block was first printed in the Kansas City Start 1936. 

The Block starts with cutting 4 1/2" squares, 2 1/2" squares and 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles out of four different fabrics.


Next, using the 4 1/2" square tan fabric, 2 1/2" red fabrics, and 2 1/2" blue fabrics you make the corner block units.  Marking the center with a diagonal line down the center of the 2 1/2" blocks.  After you have marked all the 2 1/2" blocks you will then take the 4 red - 2 1/2" block and sew them on the top left corner of each of the 4 1/2" blocks using the diagonal line as a stitch line. 


Then trim the corner back to 1/4" away from the seam and press open.

Repeat on the opposite corner with the 2 1/2" blue square. 

Then follow with the remaining red 2 1/2" blocks to finish the corners all the way around.


Since the corner units are now done now is to make the outer in between block units.  These are fairly easy by just joining the tan and blue 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles together and then pressing the seam to the dark.


Now it is time to layout the units to join them together to finish the block.



Sew all the rows individually and you will join them together.


The Finished unit! Now the 8th block of the 12 is done.  These are so much fun.

2013 Designer Mystery BOM #12

Wow,  It has been a long time since I have written a blog post.  Since last blog post I have completely swamped with the last bit of preparing to launch the new patterns we have working on the last years. Now, we are almost done and ready go to print on the first two of patterns.  More on these patterns here in the next week or so.  Really looking forward to show you all.

Yesterday, I decided to start working on all my blocks of Month.  First was the last of the 2013 Designer Mystery Block of Month #12, "Ruby Primrose". 



Started with making all the blocks, first off was the 8 flying geese.  Next was the corners pieces and center pieces.






Now, all the blocks are made, so now I can put this one together shortly.  But I will catch up on the Kansas City Star Blocks first before the next one comes in the mail.
