Graceful Points QAL Block 12

We are moving forward and fast to the end of the Graceful Points QAL. I don't know about you, but I am amazed at how fast we have moved through the QAL.

Today, we are introducing block 12, which means we have only 3 blocks left.  The above image shows all the blocks we have completed so far.  Which means that we have most of the blocks around the center done. We just have a couple of fill blocks to complete before we tackle the last block.

Block 12 - Blockbuster #20 - Stellar Collision is the block we will be introducing today.  The Blockbuster shows three variations of the block and we will be making the last block that includes the Quarter Square Triangles.   You can do any of the other blocks in this Blockbuster, but I will be showing how to make this block in the tutorial.

For this block, we will be using the BG, C1, C2, and C4 fabrics, so please refer to your color chart found in your general instructions. You will also want to make sure you download both of the Block 12 and Blockbuster #12 "Stellar Collision" Instructions, required to make your blocks.

You will need to gather the following tools,  Rapid Fire Lemoyne Star®, Tucker Trimmer® I and Square Square® 6".
Please remember that you should read the tools instructions before starting if you are not familiar with these tools, primarily the Rapid Fire Lemoyne Star® tool.  You may also want to check out the Studio 180 Design Rapid Fire Lemoyne Star Part 1 and Part 2 YouTube Videos.

Please remember that the pictures used in this tutorial are for the 6" block for the Wallhanging.  Be sure to read the Downloaded Block Instructions to get the correct cutting and trimming sizes for the 12" block, which are indicated in (Blue) parenthesis.

Let's start with making our Lemoyne Star Quarters.

You are going to start with gathering your strips that are indicated in your block instructions.  First, with rights facing up, layout strips as shown above.  Mark at the top of your background strips "Top-A" and "Top-B," then measure down from the top of the background strips the width of the strip and place a mark. This mark will be used to lineup the top of the narrow strip.

Stitch the strip sets together. Place your strips on the ironing board with the right side facing up and press the "A" strips toward the background fabric.  The "B" strips should be pressed toward the narrow strip.

Left Handed Cutting Position
Position the strips sets on your cutting mat, layering them with right sides together.  Making sure the seams nest along the long seam.  If you are a right-hand cutter, you will need to layer them with the "B" strip set on the bottom and the "A" on top. I am left handed so the opposite is pictured above.

Right Handed

You will need to use a long ruler and your Lemoyne Star tool for this next step.  Position the 1/4" mark on the seams of your strip set and bumping the other ruler up against the angled edge, this gives you a proper 45° angle to start from. While holding your ruler in place, remove the Lemoyne Star tool, and cut your first angle.

Right Handed

Now the first 45° angle, continue cutting these angle cuts by the width of the narrow strip.  You should have four layered strips,  keep them together for the next step.

Cutting show for Left Handed
For this next step, Left-hand cutters it highly suggested that you carefully flip each of the pairs over from east to west so they look like right-handed cutters.  This allows you to see the tip of the narrow strip that will help guide you for the second trim.

You are now going to make second cuts that go vertically.  Position your ruler's edge at the tip of the narrow strip and trim straight up.  You are going to cut another set of triangles for your pieced unit.

Next, open up the pieced units so they lay with right sides up. Be sure to keep track of what pieced units are your "A" and "B" units.

Position the outer triangles on top of the pieced unit so right sides facing together. Stitch along the outer edge.  Recommend that you stitch with the triangle laying on the bottom.

Press the "A" toward the narrow star fabric, and the "B" will be pressed toward the Background units.

Right Handed Cutting

Position your unit on the cutting mat once again.  The right-hand cutter should position the star toward the 2 o'clock position and Left Handed in the 10 o'clock position.  Position the 4" lines on the seams of the diamond. This size would be the size of the block that would be made if we were making a standard Lemoyne Star block.

Once all your units are trimmed you need to stitch the "A" and "B" units together.  Making sure to nest seams together and aligning the top and bottom points carefully.  Press the units open when finished.

Right Handed

Left Handed

Now its time to trim the oversized units using your Tucker Trimmer®.  Lining up the 2 1/2" trim line at the bottom of your unit and the common diagonal down the center of the unit and trim the tow side.  Flip the unit around and clean up the dog ears at the bottom.

Make 4 units.

Quarter Square Triangles

We have covered the Quarter Square Units back in Block 1, so I will only providing you a brief overview of the unit.  If you need additional assistance, please read Block 1 Blog.

Mark the backs of the two green or the white and gold fabrics with a 1/4" seam lines using your Quilter's Magic Wand. Position a Green and Gold fabrics with right sides together and the same for the White and Green fabrics.  Stitch on the lines, cut down the center and press toward the dark side.

You will now have Half Square triangles, please remember you do not have to trim them at this point.

Position a Green/White and Green/Gold Half Square Triangle units together and make sure the seams nest together.  Mark your 1/4" lines using your Quilter's Magic Wand.  Stitch on the lines and cut down the center of the seam lines.

Press to one side and trim to size using your Tucker Trimmer® tool.

Make 4 units.

Square Squared unit

Since we have done this unit in the past, please refer back to Block 5 blog post on how to put this unit together.

Once you have all your units completed, you will need to layout your units, as shown above.

Your Block 12-Blockbuster #20 Stellar Collision is now complete. I look forward to seeing your Blocks, and I hope you will share your photos in the comments section below or on the Graceful Points Facebook Group.  Additionally, you can post your blocks on Facebook or Instagram, making sure to use the #gracefulpointsqal and/or #quiltingaffection designs.  I can't wait to see your blocks.

Come back on Friday, July 19th for block 13, where we will review the Square Squared and Wing Clipper tools once again.
